Local 9/11 Memorials and Happenings

American Red Cross Sept. 11 Memorial Ceremony The Santa Cruz County Chapter of the American Red Cross along with the County of Santa Cruz presents this community event to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11. Opening ceremonies include bagpipes, drum corps, a welcome from Mayor Christopher Krohn, children's choir, slide show and recognition of local volunteers. Tickets are $10 per adult and $5 per child, though no one will be turned away for lack of funds. 5pm-9pm, Wednesday (Sept. 11). Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, 307 Church St., Santa Cruz. 831.462.2882.

Commemorating 9/11: Poets & Musicians for Peace The Resource Center for Nonviolence and the Mental Health Client Action Network present a community celebration of war resistance, featuring presentations by Kim Nelson, Guari Delgado, Mary McCaslin, Allison Luterman and more. A Day of Remembrance and Hope Open house at the Resource Center for Nonviolence. Join with other peace-minded people to share in informal discussion, watch a video or simply eat soup and sip tea together in a safe space set aside for remembrance and hope for a world at peace. Peace Jubilee 2002 The Peace Coalition of Monterey County, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and several other community groups present a day to promote peace and healing in observance of the first anniversary of 9/11. 9/11 Evening Services Unity Temple of Santa Cruz presents a service in remembrance of last year's events and in observance of the World Day of Prayer. The service, conducted by Rev. Kathy McCall and guest minister Rev. Irene Whitmore, will be filled with reflection, prayer, meditation, ritual and music. Free. 7pm-8:30pm, Wednesday (Sept. 11).
