The Cabrillo Music Festival celebrates American icons and new stars
AFTER A SENSATIONAL RESPONSE to last year's production of Leonard Bernstein's Mass, the Cabrillo Music Festival opens the new millennium with another theatrical presentation: Aaron Copland's The Tender Land. Most events take place at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, 307 Church St., Santa Cruz.
Concerts
Aaron Copland's 'The Tender Land.' Featuring Lisa Vroman, Gualtiero Negrini, Milagro Vargas, Milton Williams and Douglas Webster. Copland's only full-length opera tells the story of a young farm girl who comes to understand the grandeur of her homeland. Friday&-Saturday at 8pm. Civic Auditorium. Tickets are $19&-$25.
Family Concert. An annual tradition, the festival for this year's free family concert features music from CMF favorite Christopher Rouse. Sunday at 2pm. Civic Auditorium.
The New New Thing. With a program of premieres, conductor Marin Alsop looks at currents in classical music. Sunday at 8pm. Civic Auditorium. Tickets are $7-$24.
A Three Star Gala. Alsop joins violin soloists Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Mark O'Connor for a program featuring works by Randolph Peters and Salerno-Sonnenberg. Wednesday (Aug. 9) at 8pm. Civic Auditorium. Tickets are $25&-$40.
Lost in the Stars. A tribute to Kurt Weill, featuring the festival chorus and showcasing Rouse's Symphony No. 1. Aug. 12 at 8pm. Civic Auditorium. Tickets are $7&-$24.
Music at the Mission. For the season-concluding concert, Alsop turns to Scottish composer James MacMillan for a program of new works featuring Tom Stacy on English horn. Aug. 13 at 4 and 8pm. Mission San Juan Bautista. Tickets are $25.
Events
Cabrillo Music Art & Wine Festival. A street fair featuring world music, art vendors, and food and wines. Saturday&-Sunday, 11am&-8pm. Church Street between Center and Chestnut streets, Santa Cruz. Free.
Lunch With the Composers. Spirited panel discussion about the festival program featuring Alsop, Rouse, Emily Wong, Michael Hersch and soloist Colin Currie. Saturday at 1pm. Santa Cruz City Hall Courtyard, Church and Center streets, Santa Cruz. Free.
Music at the Millpond. Benefit features wine tasting, gourmet food and a chamber music concert presented by festival concertmaster
Yumi Hwang. Aug. 11 at 6pm. Millpond, Soquel. Tickets are $75.
Open Rehearsals: Often presented with a prerehearsal talk, open rehearsals offer a glimpse of one of the country's finest conductors at work leading the area's finest orchestra. Wednesday (Aug. 2), 7:30&-10pm. Thursday, 10am&-12:30pm. Friday, 10am&-12:30pm. Tuesday, 4:50&-5:30pm and 7:30&-10pm (with a talk by John Dizikes at 7pm). Aug. 9, 10&-11:20am. Aug. 10, 10am&-12:30pm and 7:30&-10pm (with a talk by Marin Alsop at 7pm). Aug. 11, 10am&-12:30pm.
