Fat Fry Lineup Sixth annual summer edition of the Fat Fry lays it on thick with Americana heroes By Rob Pratt WHY THE FAT FRY? The story goes back to legendary free-spirited radio station KFAT, which, of course, accounts for the "fat" part. "Fry" is probably from all that sun from a day of bands in the park. This year's lineup marks the sixth annual event, which three years ago split into summer and fall editions. Saturday The Indigo Girls: Singer/songwriter duo Emily Saliers and Amy Ray easily rank as most-favored new folkies. Altan: Something of an Irish traditional supergroup, Altan launched a sensation by playing the little known but very rhythmic Donegal style. Mumbo Gumbo: Led by charming singer Chris Webster, Mumbo Gumbo draws on pop, rock, roots and folk for a sound that has made the band a perennial Fat Fry favorite. Joules Graves: An engaging singer/songwriter, Joules Graves can win over crowds of thousands with nothing more than her voice, a guitar and a couple of hand drums. With a band, she's a show-stealing sensation. Sunday John Hiatt & The Goners: Singer and songwriter John Hiatt has done it all--from prodigal-but-troubled youth to comeback kid with a trio of late-'80s and early-'90s albums dedicated to his new-found recovery. Bruce Cockburn & Band: Guitar virtuoso Bruce Cockburn became a superstar in his native Canada with a slew of folk-rock albums during the '70s and a cult hero among Americana fans. Southern Culture on the Skids: Unlike most bands, this insurgent country-rock outfit found one shrewdly evocative of its approach: Trailer-park denizens have more fun. Laurie Lewis: Fiddler and guitarist Laurie Lewis is one of the finest of the new crop of bluegrass players. Tickets are $32 adv/$36 door for Saturday, $28 adv/$32 door for Sunday (children under 14 free), available at Streetlight Records and BASS outlets.
