Where to find dance nights
The Aptos Club: DJ Taylor of the Octane crew spins a split-personality mix of house and hip-hop every Wednesday.
The Blue Lagoon: DJs every night of the week. Styles range from deep house (Fridays and Saturdays) to hip-hop (Wednesdays), salsa (Sundays) and industrial and gothic (Mondays).
Club Dakota: DJs every night of the week. Mostly eclectic, Minneapolis funk to pop to hip-hop with a little bit of house thrown in. Top DJs are A.D. Wednesdays and Saturdays and Eric Fridays and Tuesdays.
Moe's Alley: Blues club gets into the groove with weekly drum 'n' bass nights (Bassic Elements on Tuesdays) featuring Iota and guests, occasional deep house nights (Majik on some Wednesdays) and some Sunday funky-beats collectives.
Rosie McCann's: Octane DJs Taylor, Brian and Lex spin everything from '70s disco to '90s pop and hip-hop every Friday.
Other Spots: For the rave faithful, Santa Cruz County plays host to many underground dance parties. Top spots include the Brookdale Lodge, the Yoga Center on Front Street and, during the warm-weather months, various North Coast beaches when sheriff's deputies can be eluded. Telling the where-and-when of them, though, violates the underground spirit. So for a hint, check a well-known rave-culture website: www.hyperreal.com.
