Where to obtain open water certification and professional instruction in Santa Cruz County

The $180 cost includes class and pool instruction and scuba rental for four ocean dives. It does not include books ($45) or boat rental fee ($50) for final two dives. Students must provide their own masks, snorkels, fins, gloves and booties ($150-$250). Currently running half-price special on instruction ($90).

Aqua Safaris Scuba Center
231 Evergreen St., SC (423-3483).
The $175 cost includes class and pool instruction, seven ocean dives and an overnight camping trip. Does not include scuba rental ($50 for class). Students provide their own masks, snorkels, fins, gloves and booties ($140-$250). Two-for-one instruction special ($87.50) runs through summer.

Ocean Odyssey Dive Center
2345 S. Rodeo Gulch Road, SC (475-3483).
The $324 cost includes class and pool instruction, books and scuba rental for six ocean dives. Students provide their own masks, snorkels, fins, gloves and booties ($150-$250).
