Lights, Camera, History: Helen Garvy's 'Rebels With a Cause,' a documentary about the SDS, was top pick for local film production.

Best Arts

THE MORE MOVIES CHANGE, the more they stay the same. Last year's runaway (Run Away! Run Away! as Monty Python used to advise) winner for Worst Movie of 1999 was The Blair Witch Project. This year's top pick for bottom of the barrel is ... Blair Witch 2. Indeed, what a dreadful year it was at the cinema: Battlefield Earth provided the last nail in the coffin of John Travolta's comeback; Mission to Mars sucked worse than the vacuum of deep space; one reader stills bears a big enough grudge against Eyes Wide Shut to submit a vote for it in 2001. On the plus side, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon outleapt the competition for best film.

Locally, we fared better, with Helen Garvy's marvelous documentary about the SDS radicals of the '60s, Rebels With a Cause. Readers also gave a heartfelt nod to Mountain Community Theater, which has persevered and grown over the years with productions full of heart and high spirits. It also seems that every voter has a favorite artist, so we declared a great big tie at the top and listed as many worthy winners as we had room for.
