The weather held up for the 1,200 athletes, who swam, biked, and ran their way through Santa Cruz’s annual triathlon this Sunday. The morning temperatures hovered in the mid-50s, and the sky was overcast, making it much easier to compete. While medical crews were stationed along the course to help with all the scratches and bruises expected during such a grueling event, at least they did not have to deal with problems like dehydration.

Sunday was the 27th annual triathlon event, which raised about $50,000 for local high school and college sports programs. The winner was Sam Inkinen, 34, of San Francisco, who completed the event in 1:56:11. Local favorite Tommy Zafares took a spill on his bike, and was forced to abandon the race.
