The air in Watsonville just got a little cleaner, and the people to benefit most are kids. The Pajaro Valley Unified School District has just replaced 12 school buses, considered to be among the most polluting in the Central Coast. The old school buses, built with mid-twentieth century technology, contained two-stroke engines, which release 25 times more soot into the air than more modern vehicles with four-stroke engines. The District now hopes to replace more of its buses next year, but that depends on funding, and in the current economic climate that seems increasingly unlikely.
