Watsonville law enforcement surprised but delighted by positive news.

While state legislators debate what to do about overcrowded prisons, Watsonville is setting an example for the rest of the state: the city is reducing its crime rate. According to a recent report, crime in Watsonville has dropped 17 percent, with violent crimes declining 12 percent. The only drawback was the increase in murders, from one last year to three this year, two of them involving gangs. Police, who were themselves surprised by the figures, say that the drop in crime can be attributed to greater cooperation with the community, a focus on repeat offenders, and longer patrols with officer overlap.
