Organizers of this year’s WAMMfest at San Lorenzo Park are once again asking the city to consider lifting its ban on smoking in public parks for the medical marijuana festival. Smokers with the necessary identification would be directed to a special tent, where they would be allowed to light up. WAMM is the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana, a group that represents hundreds of people who are allowed to smoke pot to relieve their symptoms. On the other hand, city officials are worried about a repeat of previous year’s problems, when participants from out of town used the opportunity to smoke marijuana recreationally. Police admit, however, that there were no problems at the festival last year, and WAMM itself provided security, so it appears that the first exception to the city’s stringent smoking ban is likely to be lifted.
