Four UCSC professors have been chosen to join the California Academy of Sciences in recognition for their work.
Gregory S. Gilbert, Professor of Environmental Studies, is also the Director of the Santa Cruz-Watsonville Inquiry-Based Learning in Environmental Sciences, a partnership between UCSC and Watsonville High School, designed to promote science education in the county.
Gary Griggs, Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, is also Director of Long Marine Laboratory and the Institute of Marine Sciences. His work focuses on the California Coastline, studying the effectiveness of protective structures such as sea walls on the coast.
Bruce E. Lyon, Associate Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, studies the mating and parenting behaviors of various animals. His most recent work focused on the coot, a bird that kills chicks placed in its nest by other coots. Grant Pogson, also an Associate Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, is a geneticist whose work focuses on fish and invertebrates. Read more at Santa Cruz Sentinel.
