It may be the first day of classes on the calendar, but the staff at UCSC is preparing to strike today to protest enforced furloughs and fee hikes agreed upon by the UC Board of Regents. On other UC campuses, the faculty has agreed to walk off with the strikers, but the Santa Cruz Faculty Association has advised its members to greet their students on their first day. Some faculty members announced that instead of walking off with the union, they plan to hold teach-ins about the current budget crisis.

Graduate students are planning to walk out in support of the strikers, while the Student Association, representing undergrads, has also announced its support of the strike. Many of the students are expected to attend the two protest rallies, scheduled for noon and 3:30 pm. The students will also be protesting planned fee hikes, which will increase tuition by $2,514 this year. Read more at the Mercury News and Fox 35.
