The 45 UCSC students who occupied Kerr Hall in response to a 30 percent tuition hike have been summoned to appear before a council.
UCSC is cracking down on the students who occupied the administration building this November. The school sent 45 students summons as part of its investigation into the event. School spokesperson Jim Burns says that the students may have violated the Student Code of Conduct. “A protest to call attention to that statewide issue is more than understandable,” said Burns. “A protest that terrifies UCSC workers, displaces nearly 150 of them for days, degrades into vandalism and requires a costly cleanup is not.”
Not all UCSC workers and faculty admit to being terrified, though. Professor Dana Frank of the history department says that many faculty members believe the school is overreaching in response to what was a crisis. Kerr Hall was occupied in response to a decision to adopt on a series of severe budget cuts and raise tuition by 30 percent next year.
Students who were summoned will appear before a disciplinary council. They could face sanctions and even expulsion. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
