Still reeling from the announcement that UCSC has decided to cut out day care services for faculty and staff, staffers at the school’s childcare center are looking into opening their own center to serve those families and counter potential layoffs.

Still reeling from the announcement that UCSC has decided to cut out day care services for faculty and staff, staffers at the school’s childcare center are looking into opening their own center to serve those families and counter potential layoffs. “Families are going to go desperately trying to find child care and workers are going to go desperately trying to find other jobs that may or may not exist in the employment market,” said Nora Hochman, a union official with the Coalition of University Employees.

One option currently being explored is to open a daycare coop at the Granary, where the preschool program was hosted until now. If, as is likely, the university rejects the idea, the teachers are considering opening up a private center on the Westside. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
