UCSC Scholarship Fund for Shooting Victim

A new scholarship has been created at UCSC in memory of Gabriel Zimmerman, an aide to Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords who was killed in the Tucson massacre on Saturday. Zimmerman was a UCSC alumnus. The fund was established by two alumni, Alex Clemens and Jonathan Klein, who have no connection to Zimmerman but were inspired by his story. “He embodied the traits you want to see for a person who goes into public service,” said Clemens.

The fund will benefit undergraduate students in the social sciences who are committed to social service. Zimmerman studied sociology at UCSC and went on to complete a masters degree in social work in Arizona. He later worked with disadvantaged children.

Donations to the fund can be made through its Facebook page or its Chipin account. The university has also begun collecting donations directly through the Make a Gift button on its Giving page. The fund hpes to raise $50,000 in Zimmerman’s memory. Read more at KTVU.
