UC Santa Cruz will be keeping its federal funding after a judge ruled in its favor in federal appeals court. The suit against the university was filed by the conservative Young America’s Foundation. The group claimed that the university had violated the Solomon Amendment, which denies federal funding to schools that do not grant military recruiters the same access to their campuses as other prospective employers. While UCSC provides equal access to military recruiters, they have had difficulties recruiting on campus because of student protests, and they even had to leave campus after protests during a 2006 job fair. The Young America’s Foundation argued that while the university ostensibly allowed recruiters, by tacitly approving the protests, it effectively denied the recruiters equal access. The judge dismissed the case.

The most recent ruling upheld the previous judge’s decision, adding that there was no evidence that cutting off federal funding would have an impact on recruiters’ access to the campus. The Young America’s Foundation was unavailable for comment. Read more at SF Gate.
