There’s an “Eye in the Sky” looking out for Keyfax NewMedia on Santa Cruz’s Eastside. The company recently hired legendary recording guru Alan Parsons for its new project, The Art and Science of Recording Sound, to be available on broadband. Six hours of material explaining sound recording are already available online, with a three-disc DVD box set of the entire series to be released in March. The partnership was made possible because of the close personal friendship between Parsons and Keyfax founder, musician and record producer Julian Colbeck. The two met almost two decades ago, when Colbeck was playing as a sideman for Yes.
Parson’s career is legendary in the music business. When only 18, he was a producer for the Beatles’ Abbey Road album. He also worked as an engineer and producers for fabled musicians Al Stewart (Year of the Cat) and the Hollies (“He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”). Perhaps his greatest achievement, however, came in 1973, when he engineered Dark Side of the Moon for Pink Floyd. Dark Side is the best-selling album of all time. In the 1970s and 1980s, Parsons lent his name to a group of studio musicians, the Alan Parsons Project, who also had a string of successful albums. Parsons now lives in Santa Barbara.
