Beaches throughout Santa Cruz County were closed Saturday following an 8.8 magnitude quake in Chile. Authorities said the advisory would be in effect through mid-afternoon.

The National Weather Service called an advisory, rather than a warning, because the waves are expected to be less than a meter high. The advisory is for the entire West Coast.

The devastating temblor struck the Chilean coast about 200 miles southwest of the capital city of Santiago around 3:30am this morning, killing at least 82 people and collapsing buildings and bridges throughout the region. Every nation around the Pacific Ocean—about a quarter of the globe—faces a tsunami threat.
