With Santa Cruz facing a $9.2 million deficit, Santa Cruz municipal lawmakers are on the lookout for where they can cut. The Santa Cruz County Conference and Visitors Council (CVC) is one potential target. Last year, after a 10 percent cut, the council gave $386,562 to the CVC, which is responsible for drawing tourists to the city. This year, Councilman Don Lane is proposing another 10 percent cut, with the money being used for social services instead.

Proponents of the cut argue that with everyone else experiencing cuts, there is no reason why the CVC should be immune. Opponents say that tourism, including hotel taxes and revenue generated by tourists spending at local businesses, is one of the most reliable sources of income for the cash strapped city, and that this revenue is largely due to the work of the CVC.
