“Perseverance, dear my lord, keeps honor bright,” wrote William Shakespeare in Troilus and Cressida, and it is a lesson that’s been taken to heart. Despite the perfect storm of financial difficulties faced by Shakespeare Santa Cruz and UCSC, the company’s artistic director, Marco Barricelli, and UC Santa Cruz Dean of the Arts David Yager have decided that the company will carry out its 29th season. Yager told reporters that he wanted to find a long-term solution for Shakespeare Santa Cruz, but added that the company had reached 88 percent of its projected ticket goal, and this was enough to make the venture worthwhile. Meanwhile, the company’s website is focused on fundraising, though it contains no information about what the coming season will look like, apart from an upcoming performance of “The Diaries of Adam and Eve” this weekend. Reportedly Barricelli will have chosen next year’s plays by the end of the month. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
