Finally had enough of that foreign sport, soccer, which is about as American as tapas or boerenkoolstamppot with rookworst? Want a sport as American as tater tots and processed cheese in a can? Good news, Santa Cruz! The rodeo is coming to town! Yesiree! Yee-haw! Santa Cruz County is about to host its first-ever rodeo, with broncs and bulls and barrel racing. There will be steers to wrestle and rope, and countless other events, many of them reminiscent of the charreada, a tribute to our Mexican American population. After all, that developed into what we know as rodeo today.
The rodeo is being spearheaded by the County’s Deputy Sheriff’s Association. It’s for a good cause—to raise money for community organizations, though animal rights groups aren’t convinced the ends justify the means. The big event is scheduled for October 2 and 3, so break out your lariats and spurs. Just watch out for the clowns—after all, even rodeo clowns can be terrifying. Read more at Fox 35.
