What do you do for a living?
I’m a writer/artist/social media enthusiast with an interest in a lot of things. I write three blogs and am anticipating the position of Director of Miscellany for a new start-up currently being funded.
What would you be doing if you weren’t doing that?
Since I’m not allowed to do neurosurgery, I might like to be an attorney in the field of healthcare policy or a costumer on Broadway.
What do you do in your free time?
Besides writing and art, I love seeing films, I get caught up on my favorite animes (Gintama and Bleach), read and research on the internet, and volunteer for Leadership Santa Cruz County Alumni, the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County, and the Emergency Medical Care Commission for Santa Cruz County. I spend time with friends and give attention to my tweenie dachshund, Buffett. I’m never bored.
What brought you to Santa Cruz?
The artistic community, the geographic diversity (mountains, ocean AND farmland!), the generosity of spirit and general liveliness of the place.
What’s your favorite street?
In all the world? Third street in L.A. because I remember taking Angel’s Flight (the funicular) up the side of the hill to visit my great grandmother. I loved the juxtiposition of the Victorian buildings and funicular with the 3rd Street tunnel and the busy modern traffic. In the County, it’s Quail Hollow Road because of the way it meanders past houses and meadows and the beautiful Quail Hollow Ranch. I often see deer, coyote, and one time a bobcat. In the City of Santa Cruz, it’s Pacific Avenue – I love the energy.
Name something you’re excited about.
Using social media to do good. (There are lots more, but “something” means one.)
Name a pet peeve.
Peeve implies a minor irritant, so I’d have to say misplaced apostrophe’s (LOL).
What are you reading?
I like to read more than one book at a time. I just finished a steampunk novel (I won’t say which one because it didn’t thrill me) and I’m now reading “Made to Stick” by Chip & Dan Heath, re-reading “Swords and Ice Magic” by Fritz Leiber and “The Roominghouse Madrigals” by Charles Bukowski.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in the last three years?
The only real thing I have control over is my attitude and that I have friends whose love for me may be unfathomable, but very real and very welcome (okay, I cheated; that’s two things).
Recent personal food trend?
Last night I warmed up a glazed donut and put crispy bacon bits and a little maple syrup on top – I’d seen something similar on the Food Network. Wasn’t bad – tasted like pancakes with a side of bacon – but I don’t think it’s going to be a trend for me. Thanks to Soif, I’ve developed a real love for bleu cheese with chutney on baguette.
