Founder, Bonny Doon Vineyard

What do you do for a living?
Make wine, grow grapes, anguish about the possibility of discovering terroir (the unique sense of place potentially expressed in wine) in a very short lifetime.

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing that?
Probably just the anguishing part.

What do you do in your free time?
Free time? (I actually do sneak in the occasional crossword puzzle.)

What brought you to Santa Cruz?
UCSC, narrative evaluations, Norman O. Brown and the meadow out beyond College V.

What’s your favorite street?
Smith Grade (up in Bonny Doon)

Name something you’re excited about.
Bio-char. (It will grow more nutritious produce and conserve water, and save the planet from catastrophic climate change in the bargain.)

Name a pet peeve.
Grossly over-ripe wines that are so “great” as to be undrinkable.

What are you reading?
Currently Against the Day by Thomas Pynchon

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in the last three years?
The world is changing fast; fasten your seatbelts.

Secret star crush?
A younger Faye Dunaway. (I have a thing for women named Bonnie.)
