On Oahu waiting for the Quiksilver Eddie Aikau invitational, big-wave rider Peter Mel took a minute to satisfy our curiosity.
What do you do for a living?
I’m a semi-retired professional surfer who works for a company called Quiksilver. I am a marketing director for the Quiksilver Waterman Collection.
What do you do with your free time?
I take my son John to surfing contests up and down the West Coast of California and hang with the family.
What brought you to Santa Cruz?
My parents moved here for the surf in 1969. I was born that year in SC.
What’s your favorite street?
Coast road. Highway 1.

Surfing in the Eddie tomorrow! Yoooo Hoo!
Secret star crush?
Manu Bennett. He’s Crixus on the show Spartacus.
