Teacher Cuts Finalized

People across California are worried about the state’s public school system and how it is being handled by Sacramento. According to a study by the Public Policy Institute of California, 62 percent of residents believe that public schools receive insufficient funding from the state, and that this is directly impacting children’s education. The poll also found that 63 percent want K-12 education protected from any further spending cuts.

Good luck. On Wednesday, the Santa Cruz City Schools Board finalized its list of 66 teachers who will be cut this year (though the number does not take into account 41 possible retirements, which were approved last week). “We have no choice,” said trustee Ken Wagman.

The question is where the state would find the money to keep teachers on the job. Even if 63 percent would not like to see any more cuts, 47 percent would impose a tax increase to pay for the cost of education (49 percent would support such a tax increase). That leaves the state groping at straws, looking for other places where it can cut. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Fox35 and KCBS.
