Health officials in Santa Cruz County announced last night that they will be receiving the first batch of H1N1 vaccines as early as Oct. 1 and no later than mid-October. The number of doses should cover roughly half of the county’s 260,000 people. Priority for receiving the vaccine will be given to the most susceptible populations, including first responders and health care workers, followed by pregnant women, children under 5, and people suffering from chronic health conditions. Health officials claim that this accounts for some 36,000 people.

Despite the dearth of vaccines in this initial round, the Santa Cruz Health Services Agency says that it believes there will be enough to go around for anyone who wants the vaccine. The County will be holding public clinics for priority groups. Since this is a federal vaccine, it will be offered free of charge, though there may be some administrative fees attached. By law these fees cannot exceed $21. Read more at KION and KSBW.
