Jory John and his literary collaborator Avery Monson, who draw the cartoon “Open Letters,” have published their third book, I Feel Relatively Neutral About New York, the followup to All My Friends Are Dead. Here’s what Aptos dweller John, whose sends his cartoon to Santa Cruz Weekly for publication every Monday like clockwork, wrote us about the new book:
“Have you ever loved something, but also totally not loved it at the same time?
Would you like to ‘heart’ New York, but you’re not quite ready for that kind of commitment?
Have you ever had the feeling that other cities probably have pretty good pizza, too?
This light-hearted skewering of the Big Apple sets the record straight with semi-informed opinions, questionable charts, and some slapdash Photoshop work. On a scale from one to spectacular, we give New York a five. And after reading this book, we think you’ll agree! Or whatever.”
We love Jory John, a former volunteer coordinator for Dave Eggers’ 826 Valencia, and think you will too. (We would probably love Avery Monson too, but he’s never emailed us.) They’re having the world’s longest booksigning this Friday: six hours, most likely camped in front of Logos. Go visit them. Buy their new book. Let them sign All My Friends Are Dead or perhaps their children’s book, Pirate’s Log. It will probably be the most charming thing to happen to you all week.
