Daniel Onesto, 19, was arrested Monday night in connection with the stabbing death of Tyler Tenorio near the corner of Chestnut and Laurel streets. Onesto is one of three suspects in the murder. Tenorio’s death highlighted the problem of increasing gang violence in Santa Cruz and will be the focus of a public meeting at Tenorio’s school, Santa Cruz High, at 6:30 this evening.

The slaying, which came in the wake of the brutal rape of 69-year-old woman in her home, has caused many local residents to challenge civic leaders’ assertions that Santa Cruz’s streets are safe. Commenting on Tenorio’s murder, Councilman Ryan Coonerty said that it was “not an indication the city is an unsafe place to walk at night.” Coonerty later explained that while shocking crimes put the community on edge, thousands of people walk the city every night without experiencing any crime.

This was echoed by Mayor Cynthia Matthews, who claimed that crimes such as this cause people to “forget how much we devote every day to public safety.” Read More at Fugitive Watch. and the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
