It’s been a week since the strike across UC campuses that marked the first day of classes. In most schools, things have gotten back to normal, but not in UCSC. A group of students called “Occupy California” is doing what its name implies and continuing to occupy the Graduate Student Commons. According to their spokesman, Christopher Barkan, this is just the first in a series of steps intended to escalate their confrontation with the UC system and the state over budget cuts to the school.

Police and school officials have decided to ignore the protesters for now, and say that their greatest concern is for the non-protesting students who are inconvenienced by what is happening. When asked about the potential safety hazard, campus spokesman Jim Burns remarked flippantly, “There’s a sprinkler system.” Read More at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
