When UC’s Board of Regents met in UCLA yesterday to vote on a 32 percent fee hike for students, they gathered behind closed doors in a windowless room. This, they thought, would prevent protesters from interrupting them again and maybe even reduce the chanting outside to a tolerable drone. It did nothing to prevent the wave of protests that erupted in the system’s 10 campuses.

On Wednesday at UCSC, students occupied the Kresge Town Hall. Yesterday, they expanded their protests by occupying Kerr Hall, where the offices of the administration, vice-chancellors, and chancellors are located. The students also presented a list of demands to Executive Vice Chancellor David Kliger and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Felicia McGinty. These included 24 immediate action points and 11 long term goals, including the total elimination of student fees and a halt to all new construction on campus. Short term demands included the censure of UC Chancellor Mark Yudof; long term goals called for his impeachment.

Police have not yet responded to the occupation of the faculty building, and it is uncertain how long the occupation will last. Read more at Santa Cruz Indymedia.
