Poverty is up; giving is down. That, in a nutshell, is the central theme of Second Harvest’s campaign to provide food for the needy this Thanksgiving. Recent statistics show that one in every seven families in the United States is short on food, and that figure holds true for California as well. Because of the recession, however, giving is down by as much as 30 percent.

In an effort to bolster the food banks, Valley Churches United will be holding food drives this weekend at the Scotts Valley Safeway and the New Leaf Market in Felton. Another campaign, “Give a little; feed a lot,” is hoping to get customers of local businesses to donate a dollar to the food bank every time they make a purchase. Second Harvest is calling on every business in the county to participate in the new campaign. Read more at KSBW.
