The SCPD promoted four of its best yesterday, with three police officers raised to the rank of sergeant and one sergeant raised to the rank of lieutenant.
The new sergeants are: Mike Eveleth, a 15-year veteran of the force, recognized by the FBI for his work on domestic terrorism. Eveleth was also a lead investigator on the UCSC animal rights case; Mike Medina, a highly decorated 21-year veteran, who has worked as a detective, investigating gangs and domestic violence; and David Perry, a former Marine and 19-year veteran of the force, who took a leave of absence in 2006 to serve in Iraq. Perry is the first African American sergeant on the force. Coincidentally, an Oregon man was sentenced to 10 years in prison yesterday for attempting to run down Perry. The perpetrator, Michael Roberts, 29, apologized to Perry in court.
The new lieutenant is Larry Richards, a 10-year veteran of the SCPD, who serves as a sergeant in the Investigations Bureau. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel and KION.
