While the SCPD’s partnership with ICE to combat gang violence may be coming under fire from the Latino community, the police department hopes that a new partnership with the partnership with the Drug Enforcement Agency will be embraced by the entire community. Chief Howard Skerry says that the new partnership is intended to crack down on drug networks throughout the city, with initial emphasis placed on heroin and meth sales in Pogonip and Harvey West. He says that there is “a clear link” between the local narcotics trade and the spike in gang-related violence. “We want to send a clear message that our agency will seek out all resources to break these criminal networks,” he says.
