Summer schools will likely fall victim to the latest round of budget cuts.

Local schools could lose $1.4 million more than they expected under the proposed new state budget. This comes on top of an anticipated $4 million shortfall. Additional cuts could also impact summer school programs, forcing them to turn down students from elementary school districts that feed in to Santa Cruz high schools. While the cuts have not been finalized, and will not be for some months, they were described as “significant and drastic” by Alvaro Meza, the school board’s Assistant Superintendent for Business Services.
