Gault Elementary School in Santa Cruz is about to receive $450,000 to encourage its students to ride their bikes or walk to school. The funding will be used to construct sidewalks and curb ramps and a pedestrian crosswalk, and to improve the bike parking facility. The funding is part of $24 million being provided by Caltrans to schools across the state as part of the Safe Routes to School program. The program is intended to encourage healthier access to schools for students. Caltrans Director Cindy McKim described the funding as “ultimately resulting in healthier children and less traffic congestion around schools.”
The H.A. Hyde and Starlight elementary schools and the Cesar Chavez Middle School, all in Watsonville, will also receive funding from Caltrans, amounting to $155,000. A total of $268 million has been allocated to alternative access to schools in California since the state first passed the Safe Routes to School program in 1999. Read more at Santa Cruz Sentinel.
