In Santa Cruz, 3,800 volunteers spread out among 50 sites across the county to pick up the garbage left by others. They came away with 9,000 pounds of trash and 3,900 pounds of recyclables. Apart from the ubiquitous plastic bags, their bounty included everything from bed frames to toilet seats, though the find of the day for California was a grand piano, found in a creek in Yolo County.
