The Janus Community Clinic, a non-profit organization based in Santa Cruz, is adopting a new approach to fighting heroin addition: a virtual reality world. Participants in the program will wander through a VR environment and practice declining offers of drugs. At first, the environments will be generic, but plans are in place to model them eventually on such real-life environments as downtown Santa Cruz.
While VR has already been used to help victims of abuse and trauma confront challenging situations, this is the first time it will be used to treat substance addiction. Read more at Santa Cruz Sentinel.
