Santa Cruz’s public libraries have come to the conclusion that the city really isn’t going to give them the money they maintain their relevance. That’s okay. They decided to take matters into their own hands, and launched their first ever capital campaign, intending to raise $1 million. The money will be spent on technology upgrades, a new InterLibrary System, and on buying new computers for staff and especially for patrons. Too many unemployed depend on the library to help in their job search. It gives them access to email and allows them to send out resumes.
While the library is raising money, a committee is in place to study alternative funding, especially given the decline in funding from the city. The committee is expected to release its report in January.
