Entertainers do more than simply entertain. They also set the fashion trends for a whole new generation of fans. For example, a popular urban legend has it that the sale of undershirts in the U.S. dropped after Clark Gable removed his shirt and revealed his bare chest to Claudette Colbert in the 1934 classic It Happened One Night. John Lennon popularized round glasses, especially among the wannabe artist-intellectual types, Nirvana made flannel a fad, and Madonna popularized sexy lingerie, especially among prepubescent girls.
Of course, it doesn’t always work. Despite all of Lady Gaga’s efforts, people simply aren’t defrosting their freezers and wearing a month’s worth of meat to work … yet. We have PETA to thank for that.
So now, the big question is whether American Idol’s new star James Durbin will be setting new fashion trends on his climb to the top. He is certainly making an effort. Last night saw the launch of the much-dreaded Hollywood Week, and Durbin aimed to please. He appeared with his practically trademark fauxhawk, but this time with a bandana around his forehead, too. That may have been his signature look, but there were also the crucifix-shaped earrings and the conspicuous kerchief turned into a tail, sweeping down from the waistband of his jeans. Keep an eye on your kids over the next few weeks to see if he is setting new fashion trends.
He also sang, performing “Oh, Darling” by the Beatles (a band, which incidentally, also redefined male hair styles). It was a strong performance, and he made it through to the next round—group sing-alongs. It was an emotional moment for all, and Durbin shed a tear or two. Well, actually, the guy cried more than John Boehner did when he found out his favorite tanning studio was closed for the night.
Nevertheless, with half the contestants already out, and over 100 eliminated in just an hour-long episode, Durbin is steadily climbing up the ladder to stardom. Let’s give him our support. Fauxhawks and bandanas for everyone!
