Peter Koht, economic development coordinator of Santa Cruz, opened the Gov2.0 Expo Showcase in Washington, D.C. by describing the UserVoice website he helped create for the city. The site allows local residents to offer suggestions on how to deal with the current budget crisis,, with visitors able to vote and comment on what they consider to be the most reasonable ideas. Only ideas that get 60 or more votes are considered by the city’s administration. According to Koht, this prevents outliers from both sides of the political spectrum from dominating the discussion, as they would otherwise do in public meetings. Mayor Cynthia Mathews, a frequent visitor to the site, uses the forums to respond to ideas, while other city officials post the most recent developments in their particular areas of jurisdiction.
