It’s a simple idea but it solves a major problem. Even when bicycles have a light for night riding, motorists coming toward them from the side often have a hard time noticing them. Three Santa Cruz cyclists found the perfect solution. Instead of simply adding lights to the front and rear of their bikes, they wrapped the frames with a 10-foot tube of light, which makes them stand out from every possible angle. Other people were excited by the idea, and the three friends—Chris Cobb, Ken Nowak and Evrett Kramer—started a website to sell their new lighting system one unit at a time. Local shops began placing orders too, and within a few weeks, the three men will be signing a contract to take their idea to a global market.

Although they’re surprised by their quick success, the three believe that the new BikeGlow could become a big hit internationally. In some 70 percent of all accidents involving bicycles, the cyclists are hit from the side. This makes riding especially hazardous at night, while other systems that provide anything similar to the BikeGlow’s illumination ability cost as much as five times more than the simple light tube fixture. The BikeGlow retails for $24.99 on the product’s website. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
