Local police are hoping some native insight will help crack a few stale cases.

For the first time ever, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office will be collaborating with Mexican law enforcement officials to help identify the remains of missing and dead Mexican nationals in the county. According to Sergeant Dan Campos, some 40 such cases are currently under investigation. Authorities plan to use DNA from Mexican citizens to help identify remains and to solve the problem of missing persons. To achieve this, DNA databases from the Sheriff’s Office have been linked with similar bases at the Mexican consulate. Sheriff Phil Wowack says that this may be the first time cooperation of this kind has taken place anywhere in the United States.
