When you think Santa Cruz, you think of the beach, with its surf and sand—a Beach Boy-perfect image of what California living is all about. Unless you are disabled. It’s not always easy to get a wheelchair across the sand, or to get the disabled to the water, where they can kayak, canoe, scuba dive, or just plain swim. This all changed on Cowell’s Beach this past Sunday. It was the annual “Day on the Beach” for the disabled, their families, and their caregivers, and hundreds of people showed up to take advantage of a beautiful summer day. In fact, so many showed up that the organizers are considering making next year’s event “Two Days on the Beach.”
Funding for the successful program came from a variety of different grants and donations. Now in its 18th year, the event also included free food and live music. It was a real beach party with a difference.
