Will there be a rodeo in Santa Cruz County? It’s still too early to tell. The Fair Board was scheduled to vote on it on Tuesday, but eventually decided to delay its decision, saying that insufficient notice had been given to all the interested parties.
While the proposed rodeo has the support of the Stars of Justice nonprofit, which is connected to the Santa Cruz County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, it also has opponents in the Community Alliance for Fairgrounds Accountability. They are concerned not only about the impact on traffic that the event might have, but also about how the event would affect the creek that runs behind the fairgrounds. Hundreds of cattle and horses on the fairground means hundreds of pounds of manure that would have to be hauled off.
In fact, manure was hauled off daily at previous events involving livestock, and the water quality in the creek actually improved as a result. Nevertheless, Fair Board Chairman Robert Marani asked for more information about the problem before the Board meets again. That’s a whole lot of … information … that the board members will have to wallow through. Read more at Santa Cruz Sentinel.
