Five million years ago, a carniverous toothed whale of an extinct species roamed the Pacific Ocean. Evidence of one, including part of its skull and several vertebrae, were discovered this week when workers removed a 1,000-pound slab of sandstone from a Santa Cruz County beach. Paleontologists say that the whale, whose exact species has yet to be determined, is the ancestor of modern-day dolphins and orcas. Read more at Associated Press.
