Runners and walkers spread out across the levee on Sunday for the third annual Jingle Bell Rock 5K race. The event, organized by Finish Line Productions, attracted an estimated 230 runners, more than double the 105 runners who participated last year. It was a close call too. This year’s event was almost moved to Scotts Valley after a few incidents marred last year’s run. In stepped Take Back Santa Cruz, with a flier explaining their determination to turn the levee into “an asset to our community and not an eyesore.”

On Saturday before the event, volunteers collected trash along the river, and police conducted sweeps of the area both Saturday and early Sunday morning. The effort paid off, with more participants, more gifts for needy children and more appreciation of what Santa Cruz could be if everyone chips in. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
