The lights downtown went off for 90 minutes on Saturday night because of a suspected power surge. Some 2,000 customers of PG&E lost electricity in an area extending from Soquel Drive near Dominican Hospital to Pacific Avenue. Hardest hit were local businesses, who were doing a thriving holiday weekend business until their shops went dark. Many decided to close early rather than wait for the problem to be resolved. A performance at the Louden Nelson Center was also cancelled midshow after the musicians finally gave up on trying to see the conductor.

Power was finally restored to the downtown area at about 8:45pm. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
