After a yearlong investigation, Watsonville police arrested 42 people suspected of being part of the Surenos gang. The raid, known as Operation Groundhog, also produced 18 guns, a variety of other weapons, and heroin and meth. Deputy Police Chief Rudy Escalante said, “We feel we’ve targeted as many of the major players as we could.” Though most details about the raid have not yet been released, police are scheduling a press conference this afternoon. At that time, they will likely say whether any of the gang members is suspected in a number of high-profile unsolved crimes that have plagued Watsonville.
District Attorney Bob Lee shared Escalante’s enthusiasm but warned that “We can’t be satisfied with this. We’ve got to continue to keep the pressure on and it’s got to be daily and routine.” Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
