The SCPD has issued a traffic advisory warning drivers that they could face delays getting around town today. They are warning that the student demonstration scheduled to begin at 4pm this afternoon at the downtown clock tower could start much earlier. By 6am, campus police at UCSC already began turning back cars attempting to enter the university grounds as some 150 protesters gathered at the intersection of High and Western streets.
In an effort to defuse the situation, UCSC Chancellor George Blumenthal appealed to students to “respect the rights of students, faculty, and staff who have classroom and work responsibilities they must honor that day.” The university is hoping to avoid a repeat of the November protests that led to the occupation of Kerr Hall.html.
