Police are still investigating the fatal shooting at Grandview Park on Friday night that left 19-year-old Carl Reimer dead. Eyewitnesses say that gang members drove into the park earlier that day, shouting gang slogans and flashing gang signs, leading police to suspect that the killing was part of some gang initiation. Reimer’s family and friends are adamant that he had no gang connections.
According to police, Reimer and a group of teens were barbecuing at an apartment in the Mission Gardens complex near Grandview Park. They had encountered the gang members earlier in the day, and asked them to leave. The party broke up at around 11pm, and Reimer and a 15-year-old friend returned to the park to get a bicycle and a skateboard. It was then that the shooting occurred.
Detectives from the SCPD are working with the Sheriff’s and District Attorney’s offices to solve the case. Police Chief Howard Skerry says that “They have a number of leads and people to contact on follow up,” but there is as yet no suspect in the murder. Both police and friends of the deceased are still searching the park for the murder weapon. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
